The history of this profession actually has deep roots. In Hellas, escort girls were called “hetaerae”. Hetaerae were free, educated, unmarried beauties, leading independent lives. Their homes gathered many prominent Greek politicians, poets and sculptors. As a rule, they were kept by wealthy patrons who paid big money for their favors, but this was not considered prostitution in traditional sense, as hetaera lived sex life only with patrons they loved. Institute of prostitution existed in Greece in parallel with hetaerae. The ancient Greek orator and statesman Demosthenes said a self-respecting Greek should keep a courtesan in addition to wife- “for spiritual comfort.” In Japan, these women were called geishas. There were special training schools, where beautiful women were recruited, trained literature, music, and dance, ability to dress well and small-talk. In 1997, Arthur Golden wrote “Memoirs of a Geisha” – a book that became a bestseller and the basis for the same movie scenario.
